Woven Linear Light

The Woven Collection celebrates the marriage of machine manufacturing and the traditional African craft of weaving.

The design of this piece is a study in contrasts: the architectural, linear silhouette is softened by the imperfect, layered nature of the weave.

Over the past year, our studio has been exploring how natural woven materials can be recontextualized within modern lighting. Weaving runs deep in African culture, from baskets to fish traps, the ability to manipulate natural fibers into functional objects has long been a way of life. We wanted to bring this heritage into a contemporary space.

The breakthrough in our process was developing a method of wet-forming hand-woven cane over a custom-machined jig. By allowing the material to dry and "set" into a rigid shape on the jig, we achieved a structural precision that is usually impossible with natural cane. This allows the hand-woven elements to interface perfectly with machined components in a repeatable, consistent way.
