Choosing The Right Mirror For Your Space

Mirrors perform many functions in your space, they define or accentuate what is already present.  With the use of natural light, you could add depth or place it where it reflects your favorite view. You can also use a mirror to make a room appear larger or to add more light to it.

We’ve put together a practical guide that will take the hassle out of transforming your home.

What goal do you have in mind?

Are you looking to add character and a stylish finish to your room or are you simply looking for a convenient yet good spot to place your mirror for getting ready in the mornings? Once you have a goal in mind, choosing the wall where to place the mirror becomes much easier. If you’ve already identified a plain wall that needs attention, that’s a good start now to decide whether your room needs some color or simply needs a showpiece to enhance and compliment your space.

A stylish mirror should complement your already existing space:

  • If you’re going for a rustic theme, you might want to consider a mirror frame with a distressed or antique look – our aged solid deep frame brass mirrors would be ideal
  • A thin, sleek framed or even frameless mirror would work best in a modern room or as a bathroom mirror or in a large, plain open space – such as our naked, charcoal and copper edge.

Three most important things to look out for when selecting your mirrors:

Why Size Matters

The selection of size should be based on whether you want the mirror to be a focal point or merely act as the background.

  • A single small mirror on a large wall will look lost and non-essential. Choose a size that is appropriate for the wall you have selected.
  • If you want your mirror to be a focal point in your room, make sure it is large enough to stand out, but also define it by choosing a frame that makes it stand out more.
  • If you want your mirror to become part of the background, you should choose one that is extra-large so that its function is just to make your space appear larger and don't choose a mirror with a frame as that will draw attention to it.
  • Smaller mirrors can be used as projectors as they reflect light and interesting objects. They can also be used in groups. If you do plan to use smaller mirrors in groups, remember that together are acting to form a much larger shape and these could act as a focal point in the room.

Find a Shape That Works for You

Shape plays an important role in defining any space. It can create a mood, accentuate what is already there, or give an illusion of something else like creating a bigger space.

  • A long horizontal shape will serve to accentuate width, as it helps sweep your eye along a long line. A tall vertical shape will call attention to height as it makes your eye travel up.
  • An angular shape such as a square or rectangle will help give an orderly look.
  • Use a rounded or curved frame for a softer or maybe even whimsical look, depending on the style of its frame.
  • You can even create a shape by grouping several mirrors together just the way you would with photographs or framed art

It's all about style

While the shape and size of a mirror matter, the frame plays an even greater role in determining style.

  • Our soft edge, classic pill curved or frames are often best complimentary in more traditional or ethnic culture inspired setting but can be used for contrast in a more modern one.
  • Rustic frame treatment and antique looks work well for a country look, or even in a face brick room.
